Weekend Break in Imatra and Lappeenranta

Imatra, Saimaa Gardens

Sometimes you just need a weekend away in a fresh environment, to see new sights, or to simply unwind. Scandi Travel offers a fantastic weekend (or midweek) getaway to the Finnish region of South Karelia, in the charming southern town of Imatra and its cosmopolitan neighbour, Lappeenranta.

Imatra

Imatra is a town in southeast Finland, dominated by the Vuoksi River and Lake Saimaa. It has been a popular destination for travellers for over three hundred years, drawing artists, writers, and holidaymakers to its dramatic river landscape.

Imatra has a wide range of attractions to delight visitors, among them the oldest nature reserve in Finland. Kruununpuisto Park, established in 1842, preserves the area surrounding the famous Imatrankoski Rapids. This gloriously beautiful park is wonderful to explore: follow the historic trail past elegant period pavilions, rock carvings, potholes, and spectacular vistas. There are monuments to see, and the trail is signposted along the way.

Lappeenranta

Lappeenranta is southeast Finland’s cultural and economic hub. A lively university town, it is famous for its seventeenth-century fortress overlooking Lake Saimaa. Each summer it welcomes its annual Sandcastle event, when artists construct Scandinavia’s biggest sandcastle at the north of the harbour, complete with entertainment for children. Visitors can also cruise the tranquil waters of Lake Saimaa, Finland’s largest lake.

No trip to this region is complete without visiting — or, even better, staying in — the Valtionhotelli. This stunningly beautiful castle hotel, built in 1903, evokes the elegance of a bygone era and sits in the centre of Imatra by the river rapids and crown parklands. More than just a comfortable place to stay, it is an active step back in time — and is even said to have a resident ghost!

The South Karelia region of Finland is rich in history, natural attractions, and varied activities. Why not contact Scandi Travel next time you’re looking for a short break, and let the best tour company in the Nordic region help you plan the finest short vacation you can imagine?
